The Ancares Valley – Biosphere Reserve
Rural cottages near “ Los Ancares”
Our rural cottage in the Bierzo region is really close to the Ancares natural Biosphere Reserve.
In the northwestern peninsular mountains, both the Mediterranean climate and the Atlantic climate are coming together. This identity of a frontier territory gives a great biodiversity to “Los Ancares” which has been administered by a peculiar traditional culture during all those times. All these values as a whole have led to recognize the importance of Los Ancares and to confer on it the status of World Heritage. The Biosphere Reserves are an initiative of the Organization of the United Nations for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) in order to protect specific land and marine ecosystems which are helping for the preservation of biodiversity, for the sustainable development of an area and for scientific research.
The UNESCO intergovernmental program “Man and Biosphere” (MAB) has been responsible for these natural landscapes since 2006. The reserve extends itself on a 56000 hectares-area which includes the municipalities of Villafranca del Bierzo, Vega de Espinareda, Peranzanes y Candín.
