Our rural cottage lies at the heart of the Bierzo region close to whatever you would like to visit in the municipality, including the Valley of Silence.
The valley of Silence – of gift for the senses
The scenery along this short ride gives its visitors the opportunity to relax while appreciating the clear waters of the Oza river and driving along a sinuous mountain road in a luxuriant vegetation. Maintaining us on this road we will find a crossroad leading to the village called San Pedro de Montes before reaching Peñalba.
Peñalba de Santiago
Peñalba has been given the status of a National Artistic Historical Site. It is a small but very charming village which still preserves extraordinary remnants of the local rural architecture: constructions with slate roofs and gross wooden balconies and its famous church of Mozarabic style.
La Tebaida berciana
Maybe the inspiring scenery of these lands embedded in the Aquiline Mountains was the reason why this area had raised as a first status spiritual center from the V century on until the beginning of the Middle Age .
The arrival of Saint Fructuoso and Saint Genadio marked the beginning of the profusion, first of hermits and later on of numerous monasteries in its surroundings. There are few remnants left of these times but those that still linger are of utmost importance, as can testify the breathtaking Monastery of “San Pedro de Montes” and the unusual beauty of the Mozarabic Church of Santiago de Peñalba, which, together with the Holy Cross Hermitage and the St Genadio Cave, indicates the remnants of a past that was in the quest for some reconciliation with God in a time of uncertainties. For this reason this place has been well chosen for its exceptional natural beauty. Moreover the restored village of Peñalba with its rebuilt houses is one of the better examples of the popular architecture of the Bierzo.
