Ecological agriculture in The Bierzo

The Association for Ecological Agriculture “La Olla del Bierzo”

Under the terminology ecological or biological agriculture, one understands the practices used in agriculture and cattle farming which objective is to produce food of best quality with the help of techniques and methods being more respectful of the environment.

But this definition, strictly agronomic, is not complete. We shall add that the production of ecological food should respect the social environment, as well as the local and rural economy, and should contribute to maintaining what already is, thus being a good example of fair trade and fair relationships between growers and consumers. In the end, it is a life style and a different way of thinking.

The Bierzo certainly is one of the Spanish regions having the highest farming potential. It is within this context that a group of growers, consumers and technicians started ecological food producing projects, transmitting its power and investigating new forms of commercializing its products.

A small group of producers joined this project and created an association of consumers, opening sale stores and organizing activities like classes, workshops and conferences.

Following are listed the main ecological products that any visitor shall find:

- Horticultural products of any type, depending of the time of the year since these are seasonal products. To be mentioned are peppers of the Bierzo, tomatoes (for salads, cherry and other special varieties) and potatoes, plus a variety of some 30 different vegetables.

- Fruits, also seasonal, with a special mention of cherries (in May and June), fresh figs (in August and September) and quinces (in September and October), a small production of apples, kiwis, khakis, plums, strawberries y peaches.

- Wines with three different cellars in activity in the area. The variety Mencía has been approved by the Regulation Wine Council of the Bierzo and is also being produced following the so-called ecological methods.
