Trekking and hiking routes through the Bierzo
Our rural tourism cottage enjoys a privileged location as a starting point for activities in the nature. There is a wide net of paths already existing and allowing to get to know better this region and its natural heritage.
Starting form the very same house one can enjoy walking the forest paths which are linking San Juan with the nearest villages like Cueto, Sancedo, San Miguel de Arganza, Arganza, San Vicente de Espanillo etc.
Taking the path of Sancedo, at about 1 km walking distance, one can see the chestnut tree of Sotorredondo, one of the centenarian trees of the region.
In the upper part of the village, there is a forest path leading to the mount of San Juan. From its highest point of view called “La Escrita” you will discover an exceptional view over the Bierzo Valley.
It is our wish to help our customers enjoy their visit of the Bierzo at the fullest. Therefore we will always inform them personally about the resources and possibilities within our region. We also put at their disposal some publications in the house, so that they can quietly choose the places which they are mostly interested in.
La Mirada Circular – Circular Trekking Route around the Bierzo
The exacerbated strength of the natural heritage in the geography of the Bierzo region has been marking its growth and life style over the centuries. Today it can even decide about its future. This is why the persons who are involved in the project La Mirada Circular are counting on the fact that the local touristic industry is sustainable and in the end, they aspire at making it look again at the protection of the most valuable good of the Bierzo.
The project consists of starting one of the longest green routes (free of any motorized vehicle) on the Iberian peninsula, excepting the GR in the Pyrenees. It will be 330 Km long, traversing in its length the mountains circling around the region. It will be divided in 15 stages of one walking day or less in 4 areas: Ancares, Gistredo, Aquilanos, and Lastra. The route will go through 52 localities in 19 municipalities, and through places as emblematic such as Las Medulas, Campo del Agua, El Castro de Chano, Peñalba etc.
During the study process of this initiative, the persons responsible of this project could observe that the region is already made of many routes opened by the Regional Council or different city councils within the Bierzo. The considerable task of taking stock of all these trekking possibilities is the challenge taken by the project manager, Alfonso Fernández-Manso. A closer look at them allowed to keep track of more than hundred paths with an average length of 8 to 10 kilometers. Between 800 and 1000 kilometers of paths have been summed up in total, which implies a huge amount of touristic resources in order for the Mirada Circular project to be able to offer a complete trekking package.
